Bernie Wrightson |
House of Secrets v1 #106, 1973 - The rescue of a lost seaman prompts a journalist to search for his claim of a vampire-infested island.
Alex Nino does a splendid panel of a raging storm at sea (see interior page below). From there, his artwork somewhat deteriorates due to overly distorted faces. By contrast,
Bernie Wrightson's cover is as breathtakingly beautiful as it is horrific. Spindly branches fill the layout, heightening tension in an already frightening scene. Shadows are cast menacingly across the woman's back, completing one of the artist's best bronze age covers. Other artists in this bronze age comic include Ruben Yandoc and Alfredo Alcala. Something doesn't look right with the shadow on the woman's face on the cover. Notice the jawline- oddly separate from the main shadow on the face and lacking the masterful finesse we expect from Wrightson. I suspect something didn't reproduce right or the face was reworked.
Hmmm... doesn't really bother me. I'm ok with a certain level of distortion or misproportion, as long as it doesn't detract from the overall aesthetic.
